Men’s final: Coello and Tapia, the impossible comeback

The final pitted the world’s two best pairs, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, against each other for the fortieth time. Coello and Tapia took the first set 6-3; Galán and Chingotto levelled at 6-4. The third set at first seemed to be theirs: an early break, 3-0, then 5-3 and serving for the title.

That is when the number one pair turned the match around. Coello and Tapia broke back, drew level at 6-6, then crushed the tie-break 7-1, winning the last seven points. The Chatrier roof had been opened during the match.

Scoreboard of the men’s final of the 2026 Paris Major: Coello and Tapia beat Galán and Chingotto 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), after trailing 0-3 and then 3-5 in the third set
Trailing 3-5 in the third set, Coello and Tapia won the last seven points of the tie-break.

This title makes them record holders: four Paris Majors in a row (2023, 2024, 2025, 2026). For Galán and Chingotto, it is a third straight final lost in Paris; for Chingotto, the fifth of his career at this event. According to Padel Magazine, the head-to-head between the two pairs now stands at 27 wins to 13 in favour of Coello and Tapia.

For Ustero, it is a first Major title, two years after losing a final in Paris. For Sánchez, it is a third crown at Roland-Garros, after 2023 and 2024.

“I couldn’t have chosen a better way to win my first Major,” Ustero said after the final, according to the FIP. “We played a perfect final.” Sánchez highlighted the venue: “Winning here, on a court like Philippe-Chatrier, playing at our best level, is really special.”

Fernández and Calvo were playing their first Major final, in only their fourth tournament together. In the semi-finals they had knocked out the defending champions, Delfina Brea and Gemma Triay, the No. 1 seeds, 6-4, 6-2.

The French players at Roland-Garros

The FFT (French Tennis Federation) had awarded main-draw wild cards to Dylan Guichard and Thomas Geens, Timéo Fonteny and his Spanish partner, and Benjamin Boronad and Maxime Robert in the men’s event, as well as to Louise Bahurel and Carla Touly in the women’s.

The best French run came from Thomas Leygue, who came through qualifying with the Spaniard Moya: the pair reached the round of 16, after wins over Gala / Jensen and then Sanyo / Esbrí (6-2, 4-6, 7-5), before falling to Stupaczuk and Sanz. Guichard and Geens recorded a convincing first-round win (6-0, 6-2 against Pineda / Ruiz), and Fonteny also won a round. Boronad and Robert, the only all-French pair, lost in their opening match to Rubini / Piotto (7-5, 6-4).

Three weeks later, Leygue won the 2026 French Championships with Bastien Blanqué.

A record 81,000 spectators

Attendance was the other highlight of this edition. The FIP reports 81,000 spectators over the week, 17,000 more than in 2025 (64,000), an increase of 26.5%. On finals Sunday, around 15,000 people filled the Chatrier. The figure includes the first “padel festival”, held on 6 September, which drew 11,217 visitors according to Padel Magazine.

This success is part of wider growth: the FFT used the tournament to announce 850,000 players in France, 150,500 padel licence holders and 4,520 courts, figures we break down in our article on padel in France. The Paris Major will stay at Roland-Garros until at least 2029.

The Paris Major roll of honour since 2022

Year Men Women
2026 Coello / Tapia Sánchez / Ustero
2025 Coello / Tapia Brea / Triay
2024 Coello / Tapia Sánchez / Josemaría
2023 Coello / Tapia Sánchez / Josemaría
2022 Galán / Lebrón — (no women’s draw)

Coello and Tapia have won every edition since they teamed up. The only pair ahead of them on the roll of honour, Galán and Lebrón, won the very first edition in 2022.

What to take away for your own game

The men’s final illustrates two principles any club player can apply. First, a match is won at the net: both pairs spent most of the rallies fighting for that position, with lobs and bandejas, as we explain in our guides on the lob and the volley. Second, a smash only wins the point if it is placed: at this level, a smash down the middle comes back off the glass. Winning points come from the smash to the fence or the smash out by three, which we cover in our guide on the smash in padel.

As for equipment, attacking players like Coello use head-heavy rackets. That is the approach of the SCUD Black Impact B3, diamond shape and 18K carbon; the SCUD White S3 keeps the same shape with a more forgiving 12K carbon.

In summary

  • Coello / Tapia beat Galán / Chingotto 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) after trailing 3-5 in the third set.

  • Best French player: Thomas Leygue, a round-of-16 finisher with Moya after coming through qualifying.
  • 81,000 spectators, a record for the event, up 26.5% on 2025.
